Institution of the Lacombe Free Reformed Church

Written by Garritt Pikkert
It was a memorable evening on August 27, 2004 when Rev. Jack Schoeman of Bethel Free Reformed Church, Monarch, Alberta, installed three office bearers to form the consistory of the Lacombe Free Reformed Church.

The brothers Clayton DeGroot and Garritt Pikkert, who had been members of the Steering Committee of the former preaching station, were installed as elders, and Brian Rypstra as deacon. It was a moment of rejoicing when the brothers, in the presence of the entire congregation and many visitors, confirmed their agreement with and signed the Form of Subscription.

Pastor Schoeman preached the first sermon to the new congregation. His theme: ÒThe Reconstruction of the Temple Assured,Ó was based on Zechariah 4. He noted ÒThe Obstacles, Means and Completion of this Reconstruction,Ó encouraging the consistory and congregation to carry on in the strength of our triune God.

After the service several delegates and visitors spoke words of congratulations and encouragement. Rev. Neil Pronk of Brantford, Ontario, as representative of the Free Reformed. denomination, addressed the new congregation and wished them GodÕs richest blessing. Rev. Wim Wullschleger of Langley B.C. spoke on behalf of the western Free Reformed Churches and presented the new consistory with a pulpit Bible. This particular Bible had some historical significance as it had been presented as a gift from the Red Deer Free Christian Reformed to the Edmonton Alberta congregation at its institution in 1958. Both of these congregations, for various reasons, ceased to exist in the mid Ô60s. It is now in Lacombe that the Lord in His grace has granted the re-establishment of a congregation of the Free Reformed Churches.

At one point Pastor Schoeman left briefly and returned with a large carton. It contained a specially ordered, handcrafted communion set as a gift from Bethel Free Reformed Church in Monarch. Since its inception as a preaching station in March 2002, the Lacombe congregation has been under the oversight of the consistory of Bethel FRC in Monarch and its pastor, Rev. Schoeman.

It was Pastor Schoeman who also preached the first sermon on March 10, 2002 in the Christian School Gym with 25 persons in attendance. Since then, the Lord has graciously added to the congregation so that presently there are 46 members and 12 regular attendees.

Services are now held at 1:30 and 6:30 pm at St. Cyprians Anglican Church, Lacombe, with catechetical instruction for 3 classes and Sunday school in between the services. Bible study and prayer meetings are held alternatively in midweek.

At present the congregation is without a pastor. However, it is with prayer unceasing and an assured hope that, in due time, the Lord will provide an under-shepherd of His choosing to feed and nourish this part of the body of Christ. Soli Deo Gloria.
