Our Roots And Identity: "Old" And "Free" (4)

Written by Dr. A. Baars
In a series of articles in “De Wekker” (October 20 to November 12, 2004), the weekly publication of the Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken (CGK), Dr. Baars explains some of the history of the Free Reformed Churches. These articles, in a more academic form, were first delivered as a lecture by Dr. Baars at a conference entitled, “Morsels in the Melting Pot,” at the Free University of Amsterdam on September 29 and 30, 2004. The question that was central at this conference was: to what extent did the religious convictions of small communities of Dutch immigrants in America contribute to the retention of their own (Dutch) identity and to what extent did they conform to their new environment. What follows is the fourth and final instalment of Dr. Baars’ lecture, which is translated from “De Wekker.” Editor
