New Brunswick Doctors Given Freedom of Conscience

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of N.B. has advised its members that they can refuse to perform treatments and procedures, which they consider morally wrong, and that they are also under no duty to refer patients to another doctor, Canadian Press reported. The only requirement, the college recommended in its November bulletin is that physicians must "advise patients when their personal morality would influence any recommendation or practice they may make regarding a patient. In other words, it would be improper to refuse a patient's request without stating such. The basic requirement is that patients should be informed as to why a physician is declining to provide the service or treatment requested." The recommendations follow pleas from doctors who over the past year have sought guidance from the college on their moral obligations on such morally sensitive issues as birth control and abortion. This kind of news points to the fact that many medical practitioners have a difficult time and therefore need our prayers.
