Dr. James Montgomery Boice (1939-2000)

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
Eight weeks after learning he had a fatal form of liver cancer, Dr. Boice, 61, died in his sleep on Thursday, June 15, 2000. He had received his doctorÕs diagnosis on Good Friday, two hours before stepping into the pulpit to deliver a sermon on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On May 7 he informed his congregation of his condition, asking them at one point, ÒIf God does something in your life, would you change it? If youÕd change it, youÕd make it worse. It wouldnÕt be as good.Ó Dr. Boice was senior pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, but was perhaps best known to many of us through his teaching ministry on The Bible Study Hour radio broadcast. At the funeral and memorial service on June 23, Dr. R.C. Sproul expressed the view that Dr. Boice was one of the giants of this generation in faithfully leading by example the Reformed churches in its preaching ministry in the English-speaking world. Dr Boice was also a prolific author who wrote or contributed to over sixty books on the Bible and theology.

We wish to express our sincere sympathies to his wife and family. In a recent statement Dr. Boice said: ÒThe evangelical church must repent of her sin and recover her historic Christian faith. Like the Reformation, we must move forward by the power of the Word of God. We can experience the same blessing and influence the reformers had if we hold to a full-orbed gospel and do not compromise with the culture around us, as we have been doing.Ó
