From The Editor

Written by George Bok
We have come to another Christmas season. The message of glad tidings and great joy is sounded throughout the earth. For the world it is a superficial joy, but for the Church it is a message of life, light, forgiveness, restoration and oneness with our Creator. Who can express in words the meaning and miracle of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ?

We meet several persons at the time of JesusÕ birth: Mary, Joseph, Zacharias, angels, shepherds, Anna, and also Simeon, "a just and devout man, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Ghost was upon himÓ (Luke 2:25). We read that he came by the Spirit into the temple, and when he sees the Child he takes Him in his arms and exclaims with joy, Òmine eyes have seen thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel" (Luke 2:30-32).

We notice the insight Simeon received into the mystery of God. He reminds us of Enoch who walked with God, and of Isaiah who saw the mystery of salvation when he wrote about the suffering Servant in Isaiah 53. In Isaiah 42 he states that Jesus was given to be a light to the Gentiles, and not only to the Jews. Simeon saw that the middle wall of partition would be broken down by the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Although only a Child when he took Him in his arms, he saw Him as the Suffering Saviour who would reconcile both Jew and Gentile to God through faith in His sacrifice.

This is the message of Christmas, and this message may also be proclaimed by our mission workers. This issue will tell us something of what the Lord is doing in Cubulco through our missionaries, translators and the hospital. Let us as churches be praying for this work; that Jesus may be a Light to lighten the hearts of the Achi people also.
