Atonement Contested

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
A Kampen theologian has caused a stir in the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands [GKN] with his view of the atonement. According to New Testament Professor C.J. den Heyer, the classic doc- trine of atonement does not appear in the New Testament In his recent book, Atonement: Biblical Notes On A Contested Theme, den Heyer concluded that the idea that Christ's death once for all removed the guilt for human sin is not in the Bible. The Kampen curators undertook a study of the work and concluded that den Heyer had not gone beyond the bounds of the subscription formula by the university. On November 25, 1997, the GKN synod debated the issue for an evening and in the end agreed with the curators. At first, the synod delegates were divided over the impact of den Heyer's book; some found it disturbing; others thought it stimulating and liberating; but in the end, when the final vote was taken, the synod applauded. (From REC)

As the synod applauded, I am sure the devil must have grinned! Have those people never read Romans 5:11-21, or Hebrews 9:12 and 10:10?.
