Georgi Vins Dies

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
Georgi Vins, 69, former General Secretary of the Council of Evangelical Christians--Baptists (CECB), the leadership body of 2,000 persecuted congregations in the then Soviet Union, passed away on January 11, the result of brain cancer. Vins spent many years in the Soviet Gulag--three years in prison in Moscow and the Urals, five years in a prison camp in Siberia and another five years of exile in Siberia. During the 1960s and 1970s, Vins helped establish a series of underground printing presses that produced Bibles and Sunday school material for the persecuted congregations. In 1979, Vins, by the intervention of President Jimmy Carter, was able to settle in the United States where he organized the Russian Gospel Ministries International. The main purpose for this ministry was to provide support for the CECB churches in the USSR and to help CECB refugees establish congregations in western Europe. (From Christian Renewal)

Our condolences to the Vins family. May the work done among the persecuted churches continue and receive the Lord's blessings.
