World Defends Its Idols

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
A Sunday school teacher told his class that Princess Diana went to hell, the London Times said. Jeffrey Jones, who teaches at Bethany Christian Fellowship in Walsall, England, said Diana's lifestyle "was, on the evidence, antibiblical and not one of Christian principles or one that a believer in Jesus Christ would live." He said she had an immoral affair with Dodi al-Fayed, and was not contrite. "If she had been truly Christian, she would not have consulted mediums. That is forbidden by God." ...Some Britains were outraged at the teaching. One of Jones' students, 8-year-old Darryl Prince, who had kept a picture of Diana by his bed and had been told by his mother that Diana "was a star in heaven," left the class because of the comments, the Times reported. Church of England Archdeacon John Barton said Jones was spreading "perverted theology," adding that "Diana was fallible and morally frail, but she did attempt to make a positive difference in the world."

Not Jones, but Church of England Archdeacon John Barton has spread a perverted theology. The world saw one of its idols smashed by religion. Understandably, the world reacted with indignation; but the Church of England reacted to its shame.
