Green Light For Partial -Birth Abortion

The U.S. Senate failed to override the presidential veto of a partial-birth abortion law. Advocates of the bill fell three votes short of an override September 18 after heated debate over the issue, the Associated Press said. Sixty-seven votes are needed to achieve the two-thirds majority to override a presidential veto; the vote was 64-36. The House of Representatives voted in July to overturn the veto. The bill, which would have banned a procedure that involves delivering all but the baby's head and then crushing the skull and suctioning out the brains, passed last May. Opponents argued that it is unconstitutional because it does not make an exemption to protect women's health. Partial-birth abortion "is a terrible thing and I just hope and pray my colleagues ... will see the light and will change their positions," Senator Robert Smith (R-N.H.) said.
