Royal Bank Bows and Dismisses Gay-Friendly Program

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
In September, the Royal Bank of Canada began a new program to "highlight the importance of sexual preference as one of RBC's primary diversity elements." As part of the program, RBC employees were encouraged to put a multi-coloured triangle on their cubicle, demonstrating that this is a "Safe Space" for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered co-workers. While the program was voluntary, employees were being pressured to support the program for fear of being labelled "homophobic." The first edition of the RBC "Rainbow Space" stated that, "voluntarily displaying this sticker shows gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered co-workers that they can feel safe with you, and shows unsupportive co-workers that you won't tolerate homophobia." Glenn Penner, Communications Director for The Voice of the Martyrs, says, "Yet again, the issue of gay rights has become the battleground upon which religious freedoms in Canada are being foughtÉÓ (From The Voice Of The Martyrs) However, it is reported in the secular press (late in October) that the Royal Bank has abandoned this program, because ÒThe project raised the ire of the Canadian Family Action Coalition (CFAC), a right-wing Christian group which threatened to boycott the bank amid fears the program would brand those who refused to participate as homophobes.Ó

Good for CFAC! But do not think that the ÒRainbow Space CampaignÓ will not be tried elsewhere. Stay on the alert!
