Bad News and Good News

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
What follows is first some bad news which was gleaned from articles in Tabletalk, publication of Ligonier Ministries. Every year an estimated 156,000 Christians are killed for their faith. Nearly two-thirds of the worldÕs population currently lives under regimes that persecute Christians for their faith. From the Conservative Chronicle we learn that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the West. This apparently is due to exportation of the Middle EastÕs surplus population. France, for instance, has 4 million Moslems. In a 1992 interview in Le Point, the founder of Hizbollah confidently predicted: ÒIn 20 years France will become an Islamic republic.Ó

The good news is, ÒThat the Son of God from the beginning to the end of the world, gathers, defends, and preserves to Himself by His Spirit and Word, out of the whole human race, a Church chosen to everlasting life, agreeing in true faith; and that I am and forever shall remain, a living member thereof.Ó (Heidelberg Catechism, L.D. 21, Q&A.54; printed, published and republished since 1563!)
