Chinese Churches Closed

Written by Rev. H.A. Bergsma
From China comes this report as well (by way of REC News Exchange), that since the beginning of 1997 government officials in Wenzhou have demolished or closed 200 house churches. In the process, about 40 leaders were arrested but released after paying a fine. Wenzhou, a city in the coastal province of Zhejiang, has been known for its high concentration of Christians. In its county, there are between 600,000 and one million Christians among the seven million residents. The closure came through a national campaign to close down unregistered house churches. Registering implies, of course, toeing the line on family planning (see above), tailoring the Gospel message according to the wishes of the government, and tempering anything negative about the deeds of the government. Obviously, some house churches have opted to obey God rather than man!
