NIV Gender Neutral Stopped

Written by Rev. H.A Bergsma
The International Bible Society announced on May 27 that it would halt plans to make the New International Version of the Bible (NIV) gender neutral. American reaction to an announcement that the British version would become gender neutral created massive resistance. American licence holder, Zondervan Publishing House, has agreed to the International Bible Society (IBS) directive, and negotiations are under way with Hodder & Stoughton in the United Kingdom to cease publication of the offending version. Although many contemporary Bible translations already reflect gender neutral treatment, the NIV has essentially become the Bible of the evangelical church, which has come to trust in and depend on the NIVÕs current accuracy, clarity, and readability. Dr. Victor L. Oliver, board chairman of IBS noted that in recent weeks it has become clear that ÒMany people in North America donÕt want the NIV changedÉÓ (From Christian Observer web site)

It is wise of IBS not to give in to some minority pressure groups which call for gender neutrality. But still, we have some reservations about the NIV, because it is based on manuscripts of a questionable nature.
