THE SUBSTITUTE

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed [Isaiah 53:5]. This verse shows us how the salvation of sinners was accomplished by Christ, who is here spoken of. There is no other person in all of history, in whom all the descriptions given by Isaiah in this chapter were fulfilled, but in Christ Jesus our Lord. I would like to consider these words and see at what great cost salvation was wrought, and what a mercy it is to sinners to hear and receive it most freely because it is without price to us!
